Bates, Samuel P. Our County and Its People: A Historical and Memorial Record of Crawford County, Pennsylvania. Boston: W.A. Fergusson & Company, 1899. This book is an historical account of the founding and development of Crawford County in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as told by resident Samuel Bates. It details the history of notable events, influential figures, and important places within the county. Anecdotes and collective memories are also shared.  

Keister, Douglas. Stories in Stone: A Field Guide to Cemetery Symbolism and Iconography. Salt Lake City: Gibbs Smith, 2004. An encyclopedia of grave architecture which explains the meanings behind common grave inscriptions and symbols. Symbolism featured in the guide includes animals, plants, fish, mythical creatures, human body parts, religious motifs, and society emblems. The history and evolution of grave symbolism is briefly explored.

Strangstad, Lynette. A Graveyard Preservation Primer. 2nd ed. Lanham, MD: AltaMira Press, 2013. This book is a premier source for professional advice on cemetery preservation and care. Strangstad provides a step-by-step guide of how to document and preserve grave marker and plot information.
