Biography: Nellie Watterson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gilson of Watts Flats, NY, but was adopted at only a few weeks old by her aunt and uncle, Gasker and Vianne Dutton of Hydetown. Nellie took their family name and became Nellie Dutton.

Her adopted father died of heart disease in approximately 1897. She and her adopted mother lived together until Nellie’s marriage to Edward Watterson (1880 – 1955) in 1901 at age 15. At the time of her death, she was 18 years old, intelligent, and beloved in the community. She had been in the city hospital for the removal of an abdominal tumor where she later developed cerebral meningitis and passed away.

Though after her marriage she moved out of Hydetown, she is interred in Ridgway Cemetery. She was survived by her husband, her adoptive mother, her biological mother, and two sisters.
